Abstract
Abstract: A new species of Bunohyrax, B. matsumotoi n. sp. (Hyracoidea, Mammalia) from the Bir El Ater locality (Algeria) is described and compared with the two known species from the Oligocene of the Fayum (Egypt). This new hyracoid is documented by fragmentary remains, but the characters are significant enough to establish a new species, particularly because of its extremely small size. B. matsumotoi appears to be more primitive than the Egyptian Bunohyrax. The Algerian species, together with geological and palaeontological data, argues for a late Middle to Late Eocene age for the Bir El Ater site, rather than an Oligocene age, equivalent to the upper sequence of the Fayum, as suggested by Rasmussen et al. [17].
